Wildland Firefighter Joe Miller caring for a lost fawn on a fire

From the Fireline to the Camera’s Frame

Hi, I’m Joe!

My passion for photography began alongside my career as a seasonal wildland firefighter. Amid the chaos of wildfires, I discovered unexpected beauty—scenes most people never get to witness. It started with a cheap point-and-shoot camera, then phone cameras, as I documented the raw, fascinating details of life on the fire line. Many of the places I visit for work end up on my bucket list, places I want to come back to and experience without the rush.

For many years my gear was solidly entry-level: a Nikon D3500 with the kit lenses (18-55mm and 70-300mm) plus a 50mm f/1.8 prime. Those simple tools taught me a lot about composition, light, and making the most of what you have in the field. Even now, I still appreciate that “less is more” foundation as I’ve gradually upgraded my kit.

One memory that stands out happened on a fire in Northern California. Our crew found two fawns that had lost their mother. For the couple of weeks we were there, checking on them, sharing lunch, and leaving instructions for the next shift became part of our daily mission. In the middle of destruction, we found a small pocket of life and connection. That photo, and the memory, will last forever.

I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration and learning from photographers like Chris Bray (Australia) and Simon d’Entremont (Canada). Their approachable styles, practical tips, and love for the outdoors have been hugely helpful on my journey.

I’m now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico—excited for this new chapter after years in the deserts of Nevada and Arizona. The shift to mountains, forests, and different light has already opened up fresh perspectives for my photography.

Today I continue capturing the interesting and beautiful things I encounter while traveling for work. From dramatic landscapes and wildlife to aviation and quiet everyday details, I hope these images resonate with you. I also enjoy teaching and sharing what I’ve learned—my goal is to one day help others develop their own photography skills in ways that feel helpful, useful, and relatable from a fellow “errant” shooter’s point of view.

Please feel free to contact me directly for collaboration projects or to inquire about purchasing prints or licenses. Especially feel free if you’d like to ask about the gear I use or the story behind any of my photos - every one has something interesting!
